As I said in the previous article, in reading articles, newspapers, and even
watching movies we can use various techniques to read or find the main topic.
This time we will discuss about "Using Vocabulary Knowledge for Effective
Reading". Surely when learning English or other foreign languages, we are
familiar with the word "vocabulary". Well, the more we know a lot of
vocabulary we will easily understand a reading quickly.
Vocabulary
is important for understanding keywords in context for effective reading
comprehension. A word can also vary according to a particular context. A good
vocabulary can improve text comprehension because it makes it easier for
readers to identify and understand keywords and relationships between words in
a text.
The
role of vocabulary itself is to play a key role in strengthening reading skills
and improving overall understanding of context. Creating a more fluent reading
experience. Of course, when we want to increase our vocabulary knowledge, there
are several strategies that we can do:
a.
Read often. Research has shown that students who read a lot tend to achieve
good academic performance (Petrus & Shah, 2020). By reading often we will
also remember the meaning of new vocabulary.
b.
Making strategic and effective use of dictionaries and learning resources.
c.
Active reading by summarizing words that are important and not yet understood.
d.
Engaging in discussions. This can force you to find the right words to express
your opinion.
e.
Start writing a journal or blog. Writing regularly helps to expand your
vocabulary.
f.
Listen to music, podcasts and movies in foreign languages. When we don't
understand the meaning of the word, we can search again and reread it to
remember.
So
in conclusion, increase vocabulary so that we can more easily understand and
identify a reading and also read often to increase vocabulary.
